The 40th Annual Access Hunger Walk is Sunday, May 7.
The registration and kick-off will take place at 1:30 pm. This 5K walk begins at 2:30 pm, winds through downtown Grand Rapids, and ends at Park Church (10 E Park Place NE).
WHAT IS THE HUNGER WALK?
This event enlists the community to raise awareness and financial support for 20 local and international nonprofits whose work ranges from community gardening projects, food system policy work, nutrition programs, food pantries, gleaning programs, food justice issues and community development initiatives.
HOW DID IT BEGIN?
Four decades ago, members of the Grand Rapids community recognized an urgent need to fund organizations working to reduce poverty locally and internationally. The first annual Hunger Walk was a way to publicly show support and provide financial resources for food insecure families. The response was remarkable and the success of the campaign was clear. Walking together as a united community to raise money for these nonprofit organizations was simple and effective. Since 1977, the Hunger Walk has involved thousands of individuals, businesses, and congregations who have collectively raised more than $6 million! This money goes to both local and international organizations who work to create a thriving food system in which all people have access to healthy and affordable food.
