Volunteers are needed throughout the year to support our organization.
We have opportunities for packing and distribution of Good Food Boxes (Wednesdays) , administrative workers, and we are always open to considering candidates who are interested in serving on our Board of Directors. For more information about our programs, check out our 2023 Volunteer Program Information.
“The first time I volunteered, I was hooked and kept coming back. I loved the whole experience - the people I got to work with were amazing and interesting to learn about their stories and how they got there. Even the people who were receiving the vegetables were all so helpful and thankful for this opportunity. Each week the number of vegetables that were being donated by the farmers grew, in the end we had gleaned over 17,000 pounds of vegetables. I was amazed at how much the farmers were willing to give to our cause. I think this is a great program not only because it gives a chance for the farmers to give back, but also enables people who can't afford vegetables to have a chance to live a healthy lifestyle.” - Britta Carlson, Volunteer
"HGI has provided a consistent gathering for me, something I look forward to every week. It helps me bridge the gap beyond students, beyond socio-economic classes, beyond gender, and any race. HGI offers a common ground for me to connect with all walks of life and a deeper connection to Grand Rapids and the local food system. Thank you HGI, I love you!” - Margaux Sellnau, Volunteer & Junior at GVSU
"Heartside Gleaning is a wonderful organization that I have been incredibly happy to work with. The people are kind, caring, and welcoming. The work is important and impactful.
